Calcium Dynamics

Calcium ions couple cellular stimulus to response in virtually every type of cell. Such coupling usually involves rapid and spatially limited changes in intracellular calcium ion concentrations that press the limits of physiological measurement techniques. Moreover, many important Ca signaling events occur on temporal or spatial scales too fast or small for any direct measurement and thus requires exploration by modeling and computational simulation. The Smith laboratory has a long-standing interest in the dynamics and biophyical basis of intracellular Ca signaling.
